39 lessons - pin

Today is my 39th birthday!!  I am celebrating my birthday by reflecting on 39 things that have and will continue to make an impact on my life.  They are not in any particular order but they all hold a special place in my heart.  Enjoy!!!

  1. His love towards me is the best love, unconditional and forgiving.
  2. My identity is not in what I do, it is in whose I am; therefore my identity is found in Christ.
  3. Reading your Bible and memorizing scripture is vital because one day you will need what you read for wisdom or encouragement.
  4. Get yourself a foundation scripture.  Mine is Psalm 62:7 – Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress I will never be shaken.
  5. You will never be someone’s savior, however you can point them to Christ Jesus, the one and only Savior.
  6. We are far more blessed than we think.
  7. When you pray be honest, be bold and be thankful.

  1. Marriage is hard, intentional work but it is fun waking up to the same person everyday.
  2. Sex…..it can and does exist in marriage.
  3. My husband is my confidante, my ace, my rock and sometimes a pain in my butt.
  4. Honest communication that is meant to build up and not tear down.
  5. Be your spouses best friend.

  1. Putting three year old twins to bed is like trying to herd cattle.
  2. Parenting is not for the faint of heart.  It requires time, attention, love and patience.
  3. My daughter will some day be a wife and mom.  I want her to see the good, bad and ugly.
  4. My sons will be husbands.  They will know how to love their wives and be an asset in their homes.
  5. Parenting requires active learning.

  1. Your siblings will actually be your best, constant friends.
  2. Chores should be shared within your family.
  3. You’re never too old to receive guidance and wisdom from your parents.
  4. Holidays are meant to be spent with your parents, siblings, aunt, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

39 things - marriage

  1. If someone randomly pops in your head, call or send them a text just to say hi and I love you.
  2. Kindness goes a long way, speak when you walk past someone in the hall, ask them about their day, look them in the eye and smile.
  3. People will let you down but that doesn’t mean that you can’t love or trust again.
  4. Real mentors will encourage, correct and hold you accountable.  Caring about your feelings is optional.
  5. It’s ok to be wrong sometimes.  You can’t possibly grow if you are always right.
  6. Allowing others to dictate your happiness and mood is foolish.
  7. Phone calls to your spouse, best friend or family after work make for the best conversations.
  8. Think before you speak.  I have learned the hard way that you can’t take back what you say.

Personal growth

  1. Podcasts and books enhance your life more than music and social media.
  2. Making your bed every morning is important.  Try and tell me it’s not true!
  3. Read something new everyday….scripture, blog post, article, newspaper, etc.  Reading increases intelligence and opens doors for more influence
  4. Real mentors will encourage, correct and hold you accountable.  Caring about your feelings is optional.

Self awareness

  1. I love being black!  I especially love being a black girl…loving, nurturing, honest, fierce and just me.
  2. Therapy works.  You have to be an active participant in your healing process.
  3. Emotional Intelligence is feeling strongly about something, choosing not to act swiftly but deciding to think analytically before acting.  It has become my personal mantra.
  4. If you can control your thoughts you can control your actions.  The battle is for your mind.  Choose wisely how you will defend it.
  5. My best ideas and creative thought occur in the shower.  Everyone needs a quiet space to just let your mind roam, process and think.  Find your quiet spot.
  6. It’s not about me….life is more than my needs, wants and desires.  Put others before yourself.
